Tomorrow is Grants birthday and this morning I had a "happy" breakdown. I am very thankful to have him for another birthday. Back in 2004, he had an ear infection and in the middle of the night his eardrum burst, he said he felt better and he fell asleep. The next morning when he woke up I could tell from his eyes he was completely disoriented, he had that no one is home look. He couldn't speak he was just mentally gone. I called an ambulance. When we got to the hospital I was told he had Meningitis from the ear infection apparently the infection that busted from the eardrum leaked into his spinal fluid. Unfortunately the ER doc misread the strand of meningitis and he was being treated incorrectly by this time he had fallen into a coma. Luckily the hosptial had the best doctor who handles these types of things in the state. He looked at the strand again and found it was the HIB strand, but he told me it was too late and he would be gone in less than 2 hrs. He told me this for 3 days "I know Mrs Thompson its been another day don't find hope in this (blah blah), Long story short Grant came out of the coma after day 4 and was home in a week, he hasn't had any side effects whatsoever, COMPLETELY HEALED! We were lucky, I unfortunately had 3 friends/family at around this time period who do not have the same success story all 3 of their loved ones did die.

My reason for this blog is this its getting close to flu season, IF YOU HAVE AN EAR OR SINUS INFECTION GET TREATED all 4 of these cases were from these types of infections, they are so close to the brain that if left untreated can cause bacterial meningitis. If interested here is a website that has great information: http://www.dhpe.org/infect/Bacmeningitis.html

Take care

Funny after the fact, day 4 when he awoke from his coma; he was watching football when I walked in this was in January, he looks at me and said you know I have to get out of here soon Terry Bradshaw said the SB is in 2 wks, then he ask who I was, at the time not funny but now we laugh that he knew Bradshaw before me

This creeps me out only because my wife just got an ear infection last Thursday and has been weird ever since. The slightest little sounds bother her and she's all discombobulated. I'm glad your hubby is doing well and I'm sorry I missed his birthday. HAPPY BELATED to him!

You just never know what's around the next corner. Glad to hear that Grant made it through and is OK but there always is that what if. My nephew had a similar story and Thank God it ended almost the same way yours did. Thanks for sharing, and tell Grant I said Happy Birthday !!!!!

Awe Tammy - BIG HUGS! I have heard your story about this, very scary. Just to think, Where would Jake be without Elwood. Thank GOD we have Grant and his painted face and punk rock Colts hair on the jumbotron. It is funny about Terry Bradshaw but I think I recall you telling me you thought Jim Morrison was in your room during delivery too ; ) LMAO!!!! Gotta love Demerol. Love you, Grant and those pretty kids of yours. MUAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH p.s. Mom's b-day was yesterday.
