INTERESTED IN COOKING?

Alright people...
The 2008 Downtown Chili Showdown time is fast approaching.
This year we are hosting the event to benefit the Wellness Community of Central Indiana. Check out www.twc-indy.org for more information). We are scheduling the event for September 28th at 3 pm at the Rathskeller. I am looking for 25 cooks interested in competing this year.
As has been the case in the past, there is already a lot of interest, and it's looking to be more competitive, so I need to know if you are committed to participating.
See the bottom of the email for instructions on applying to cook.
Please pass this on to anyone else you think might be interested in cooking or in attending the event.
Here's what will be expected of you if you are choosen to participate:
Basically, if you are selected as a cook, you will need to make at least a 4 gallon batch of chili and provide all your own garnishes. We are working to set up a panel of judges, and will send out the criteria they will be using to rate your chili in a later email. You will be encouraged to serve your own chili if you are so inclined, and/or talk with the judges to convince them of the genius of your concoction. You are also encouraged to give your chili a name and to present it as creatively as possible, and the judges will be awarding a prize for that as well.
There will be no fees for participating, and cooks will get free entry to the event. Your only costs would be in your chili and its presentation. Remember that this is a charity event, though, so any donations would be welcomed. You are also all asked to work you magic to get as many people to come out for the event as possible. We will be providing you with a form letter, and asking you to sell tickets to anyone and everyone you know in advance. We will also be getting a PDF file of a poster to you in the next week so you can post them all over work, home, the gym, the parking lot, the bathroom stall... wherever.
Everyone we can get to attend the event will be given a poker chip (or something similar) and will be asked to leave that chip by their favorite chili. The person whose chili earns the most chips will win the Peoples' Choice award, so you have incentive to fill the room with 'your people'.
Here's how to apply:
Starting at noon on Thursday, August 28, 2008, the first 25 applicant's emails received in my pwinters_pds@msn.com account will be given the opportunity to participate in the event this year. Please include a brief description of the chili you intend to prepare.
An applicant is defined as someone who is willing to do the following:
1. commit to prepare the amount of chili requested and to serve samples of it during the event
2. arrive at the event location an hour early to set up their chili and assist with general setup as needed
3. sell advanced tickets to the event and promote the event as much as possible
4. stay for the duration of the event, and assist with cleaning up (their booth and general)
5. send a prompt email after noon on Thursday, 8/28/08, to the email address above
Thanks, and I'll look forward to hearing back from you on Thursday.
Sincerely,
Peter

Indianapolis "Downtown Chili Showdown" - Sept. 28th (bye week)

I make an effort every year to get involved in a few activities that allow me to give back to the community. I consider myself fortunate to have a steady income, good health, a great family, a loving wife, and a strong network of friends. Using that foundation to strive to achieve personal goals for philanthropy has become increasingly important to me, especially now that the economy may be making it more of a challenge.
This year, I am already getting started on planning my big annual project, which is an Indianapolis "Downtown Chili Showdown". The event will be held on Sunday, September 28th, 2008 (Colts bye week), at the Rathskeller Kellersaal. I will post times and details as the event draws closer.
This is a fun, family friendly event, and it benefits a very worthy cause. We will have a wide variety of chili, good music, fun games, raffle, door, and event prizes, and for the adults, access to the Rathskeller bar.
This will be the 5th year I've hosted the event. In the past, we've had 25 cooks (mostly friends and family) and we've been able to raise around $2,000 every year. however, I'd like to see our numbers grow. To that end, I am making some BIG changes this year.
First and foremost, I am delegating. I've asked a handful of close friends to assume committee chair positions, and am asking them to take my notes from years past and expand on my efforts.
Second, we are going with a different charity. The event has previously benefitted the Urban Mission Branch of the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. This branch takes many of the Y's youth programs to kids in their schools, where those kids would otherwise not be able to afford to participate.I strongly support the YMCA and their youth programs, but in discussion with my committee chairs, we determined that it was time for a change. This year, the event will benefit The Wellness Community - Central Indiana and their Paulsen Family Center for Cancer Support. I was fortunate enough to work with The Wellness Community as their architect for the Paulsen Family Center, and have a deep appreciation for the work they are doing for the community.
Third, we are trying to change the way we recruit cooks. In the past, I drew from my group of friends to select the 25 cooks. Silly me, I was then surprised that we had essentially the same people show up for the event, and raised essentially the same amount of money each year. This year we are going to try to recruit more cooks from outside our group of friends (and make new friends in the process?). If we stick to the number of cooks (its hard to sample everything if we have too many more than 25), I'd really like to have somewhere around 15 new faces in the crowd. We haven't settled on our recruiting methods yet, but if you are interested, get me your contact info, including email address.
Fourth, we are changing the way the chili recipes will be judged. We have always had a popular vote and multiple "BEST" awards, but we are planning to add a new wrinkle. We are trying to recruit professional cooks and/or celebrities to act as our judges.
Fifth (and I'm sure you are glad to know this is all), we are changing the way we sell tickets. We have always charged $10 at the door. Now we will be selling tickets in advance, and we are in the process of determining a new pricing structure (It'll most likely be more expensive, but it's for CHARITY).
If you are interested in getting involved with the event planning, would like to enter a chili, are thinking about ways you could contribute, or just want to buy a ticket and enjoy the varied flavors of chili later this year, please feel free to contact me, either on this site, or by email at swamipedro@yahoo.com.
Thanks,
schwamm
