The other night at my sons karate I read chapters 7 and 8.  Here are a few brief thoughts on these chapters.

In chapter 7, An Unlikely Opening, we learn about Tony Dungy's start as a head coach.  How his different choices lead him from the defensive coaching job with Minnesota, to a head coaching job in Tampa.  Coach Dungy's spiritual self seemed to really grow in Minnesota.  There was a lot of praying done to lead him to the right possition.  To lead him to the right town, not only for him, but for his family.  His wife Lauren really wanted to be some place warmer, and feel like they were home.

Chapter 8 deals with how he put the new Tampa coaching staff together.  He did not want to get rid of the staff already there, but felt it was what was needed.  A fresh start of sorts.  At the time Herm Edwards was scouting for the Chiefs.  Herm liked it in Kansas City.  Eventually Herm came to be with Tony in Tampa.  Herm had his own prayers to pray, and choices to make too.  (He should write a book.)

It's so amazing, so inspiring, the faith Tony Dungy has.  He truly tusts that the Lord will guide him to where he needs to be.  That situations happen for a reason.  When my father died in 1996, I found out how true faith will take you through any situation.  I had had a very hard 6 months that was topped with my dad passing away, then 36 hours later my grandfathers death.  It may be hard to see at the time, but everything happens for a reason.  The Lord does have a plan for each of us.  We need to trust, have faith, that whatever happens, wherever we are...there truly is a purpose for being there.

I so agree with you. Coach Dungy is a remarkable man. His faith shows in everything he does and what he has done in the past. Everyone should read this book.

I agree completely -- after reading this book, I recommended that our church do a small-group study on Tony's book. So far, it has been extremely well-received, and well-attended. It is a book that carries an inspirational message -- even for the non-football fan.

Chapter 6 - Learning to Lead

I was finally able to read some more in Quiet Strength.  Having such gaps in between reading isn't such a bad thing.  I don't think a day has gone by since I read 4 and 5, that I haven't thought about it, and tried to apply it to my own life.  WELL DONE TONY DUNGY!

On to Chapter 6, Learning to Lead.

In chapter 6 we learn about the start of Coach Dungy's career in coaching.  I had no idea such decissions had to be made.  He obviously made the right choices, which have ultimatly lead him to Indianapolis.  I thank you Mr. Dungy for being here, for setting such examples for not only your players, but the community around you.  We are all lucky to have you around.

Looking forward to reading more, and posting thoughts to this blog.  I know this chapters comments are a little light...but sometimes that's what the feelings bring to paper (or in this case screen) LOL.

chapters 4 and 5

I finally got back to this wonderful book.  Tonight at my sons karate class I sat and read two more chapters.  It is such a wonderful book.  I am planning on taking some ME time out of tomorrow afternoon, and getting another couple of chapters read.

So here is my take on chapters 4 and 5.  I do not go in to much detail at all.  I PROMISE reading this post will not spoil the book for you.  At the end of the paragraph on Chapter 4 I do mention two very interesting facts from the book.  So if you do not want to know...stop reading before you get to the end.  (There is a warning where to stop if you don't want to know any facts.)  ENJOY my thoughts on these two chapters, and feel free to post your own thoughts and/or comments.

Chapter 4:  In this chapter Coach Dungy talks about the start of his NFL career both as a player and the start of his coaching career.  I LOVE the story of how it was such a tough decission for him coming out of college, and deciding what to do as a professional ball player.  Coach Dungy's faith, and prayer, helped him to make the decission he felt was right for him.  He was always a man of faith, but it really strengthened when he became a player in the NFL with the Pittsburg Steelers.  He had a very interesting carreer.  In chapter 4 I learned some really cool facts about his journey as a NFL player.  WARNING: If you do not want to know any facts from the book, skip on to the paragraph about Chapter 5 now.  I did not know that when he won a Super Bowl as a player it was also in Miami as it was this past February.  I had never heard that Tony Dungy was the first, and only player, to both catch an interception, and throw one in the same game.  Those are just two of the very very cool facts we learn in Chapter 4.

Chapter 5:  In Chapter 5 we learn how Tony Dungy met his wife Lauren.  What a wonderfully sweet story.  It makes you care for the man all the more.  Tony Dungy is truly a wonderful man, as well as coach.  His wife Lauren is a wonderful person as well.  They match up nicely from what we learn in chapter 5.

I am sooooo looking forward to reading more in the book Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy.  Like I said, the plan is to sit down and read a couple more chapters tomorrow afternoon.

Have a wonderful evening....

two and three

Today I read chapters two and three.  I am not a big reader.  Especially  of a bigger book like this, but I am loving this one so far.

I PROMISE not to go in to detail about the book for those who have yet to read, or start reading it.

In chapter two we learn more about his life growing up in Michigan.  We meet his parents, and siblings a little bit.  Learn more about how he grew up, and the values he was taught.  Coach Dungy grew up with a wonderful family unit around him.  His parents were wonderful people.  His siblings are very successful on their own.  He even has a sister, who is right here in Indianapolis.  Reading this chapter you really get to know what made Tony Dungy the man he is, or at least what pointed him in the direction that made him such a good guy.  We learn how his faith in god, and life, developed.

In chapter three we hear more about his sports life growing up.  How he loved basketball and football alike.  We learn what pointed him to the NFL, how he was influenced by different coaches.  Tony Dungy is a loyal friend.  We also get introduded to Tom Moore, the COLTS offensive coordinator, and learn how Coach Dungy was influenced as a young man by him.  We learn a little bit of the difficulties being a black quarterback, and football player trying to move in to the NFL in the 1970's.

I'm ready for chapter four, and look forward to reading the rest of the book soon.  I can tell it will be an eye opeing, heart wrenching, make ya want to cry, really feel something kind of book.  THANK YOU Coach Dungy for writing it.

I invite you to post your thoughts here...

My appologies

I'm mostly making this entry to get the last one off of my profile page.  I had forgotten that your latest blog entry is posted on there.  My appologies to those who haven't read the book yet.  I didn't intend to try and spoil anything for you.  I figured if you didn't read the book yet, you just wouldn't visit the blog.  That's why I've tried to keep my emails non descript, not realizing....so again my appologies.  Anyway, As quickly as chapter one went yesterday, I may not update after each chapter.  It may be more like every other chapter on the shorter ones.  I don't have the time to just sit and read like I want to, but will try to read a couple chapters each day.  I will be more careful with wording in blog posts.

Have a good weekend!  GO COLTS!
