COLTS HISTORY 96-98

i left off with probably the highlight of the pre-manning years, the afc championship game loss, and inches from our first super bowl. for some reason, even after that great year, coach ted was let go again, i guess the colts were looking for a way to get over that hump. lindy infante was named coach, he would last 2 years. his first year was successfull, and we finished 9-7, made the playoffs but lost to the steelers, in the first round. the o-line had some new faces-kipp vickers, doug widell, and eric mahlum, and a pretty good wr-marvin harrison (1st round), the defense didnt have any new starters. faulk was the offense leading the team in rushing (1078), rec (56-475), and tds (11), daniel and ambrose in int ( 3), and bennett in sacks (10 1/2), harrison was the punt returner, gardocki, and blanchard made the pro bowl, the ring of honor was established that year, and former owner robert irsay was selected, eugene daniel retired, after playing 198 games for the colts, 2nd all-time, to johnny u. 97 didnt go very well, and the colts finished 3-13, the o-line once again had some new starters-adam meadows (2nd round),jay leeunwenburg, tarik glenn (1st round) at guard, and tony manderich. the d-line also had some new starters-al fontenot, ellis johnson, and dan footman, stephen grant moved from outside to middle linebacker replacing jeff herrod, and elijah alexander took his place, 2 new cb's-carlton gray, and dedric mathis, and a new safety-robert blackmon. faulk led in rushing (1054), and td's (7), harrison in rec (73-866), and footman in sacks (10 1/2), brian stablein was the new punt ret. there were no colts selected to the pro bowl. this is when the sucess we now enjoy really started, jim irsay was named as the new owner, bill polian was hired, and then we drafted a qb (more on that guy later). infante was let go , and the colts hired jim mora, who lasted 4 years, ill do his first year, and the next blog, his last 3. the colts had the first pick in the nfl draft in 98, and selected peyton manning, the now famous ryan leaf, was actually viewed by many to be the better pick, but as we have discovered over his time in indy, bill polian is the very best, at what he does!! the colts finished 3-13 again, jerome pathon was a new wr (2nd round), peyton took over at qb, we added a new h-back/te-marcus pollard, tarik glenn moved to left tackle, and steve mckinney (4th round) was the new starter at guard. we had 2 new de's-bernard whittington, and bertram berry, steve morrison at olb, and 2 new cb's-jeff burris, and tyrone poole. we also had a new kicker-mike vanderjagt. faulk led the team in rushing (1319), td's ( 6), and rec (86-908), and johnson in sacks (8), marshall faulk was named to the pro bowl. peyton manning had the best rookie season in nfl history, finishing 326-575-3739-26, and setting the records for completions, attempts, and td's. marsall faulk set a tem record with 2227 yards from scrimmage. from 1984-1998, the colts had 5 winning seasons, things were about to change!!

COLT CAPTAIN

i am adding a new member, a personal pick, i am adding bert jones, whos my favorite all-time colt. and as most of you know, the reason i use colts7 (his uniform number) i started following the colts in 1968, and they were quite good, at that time, but i was 10 yeards old, and football wasnt my life, just yet lol jones was drafted by the colts in 1973, and i was just starting to really get into it, and i sure wish i had sunday ticket back then, i didnt get to watch the colts very often, at least twice a year, when they played the dolphins, and a few prime time games. jones was the colts first round pick in 73, the 2nd overall selection. he had all the tools, he had good size, one of the strongest arms i have ever seen, and was very competive. he played 10 years in the league, his first 9 , with the colts, and his last year, with the rams. his best season was 1976, when he led the league in passing, was selected to the pro bowl, and was league m.v.p. he also had a 100+ passer rating, one of only 3 times it was acomplished that decade. the colts made the playoffs 3 years (75-76-77) during his tenure, but never made it to the big game, the double overtime loss to the raiders in 77 is still one of the best games i have ever seen, and one of the most heartbreaking losses. out of his 10 year career, he had only 6 seasons, where he was productive, and didnt miss time , due to injury, he is considered as one of the best talents to ever play in the league.

ron meyer brought some success to the colts, and coach ted continued that, this is the 4th, and 5th years of his second stint as coach, and when things really started getting exciting in indy. in 94, we finished 8-8, we had 2 new wrs, sean dawkins, and floyd turner, jim harbaugh took over at qb, marshall faulk (1st round) at rb, and joe staysniak at guard. 2 new de's, bernard whittintgon, and tony bennett, tony mccoy at nt, stephen grant replaced duane bickett, ray buchanon at cb, and david tate at safety. derrell brewer returned punts, and ronald humphries -kickoffs. faulk led in rushing (1282), and tds (11), turner in rec (52-593), buchanon in int. (8), and bennett in sacks (8), marshall faulk rushed for 143 yards, and 3 tds in his first game and made the pro bowl. 95 was an amazing year for the colts, the only new starter we had on either side of the ball was, jason mathews at tackle. we also had a new kicker-cary blanchard, and punter-chris gardocki, and 2 new returners, buchanon on punts, and aaron bailey on kickoffs. faulk led in rushing (1078), tds (11), and rec (56-475), daniels and ambrose in int (3), and bennett in sacks (10 1/2). the colts finished the year at 9-7, and made the playoffs, and went on to upset 2 teams away from home (san diego-kansas city), and setup the championship game vs the steelers, in pittsburg, the game went down to the very last play when harbaugh threw a hail mary, the ball came down on aaron bailey as he was on the truf, but was unable to control the ball, and the colts lost 20-16, there were many exciting games that year, led by captain comeback, and a great game to end the year, we just came up a little short, harbaugh, wolford, and faulk made the pro bowl. faulk rushed for 180 yards, and was named m.v.p, and harbaugh led the league in passer rating.
