Blog: Cheaters, IU and the Pats??

Cheaters, IU and The Pats??

It was announced today that IU head basketball coach Kelvin Sampson violated NCAA rules again, after he was already on probabtion for the same type of violations.

This is eerily similar to the Pats videotaping the Jets after the NFL specifically said they would not tolerate and electronic signal stealing.

I am not originally from Indiana so I have no loyalty one way or another to the IU basketball program.  My feelings are that coach Sampson should be releived of his duties.  Even when Bobby Knight was the coach, and he did a lot of unacceptable things, he never cheated!!  This seems just as bad as what the Pats did.  I do not want to see the school that represents my state in the same category as the Patriots.

I don't think that the young men playing on the team should not be penalized for what their coach did.  I would hate to see them miss out on the NCAA tournament over this.

What do you think should be done?  Should IU suspend, fire, fine, or  reprimand Coach Sampson?  Should they wait and see what the NCAA says?  Do you think this type of cheating is the same as what the Pats did?  Do you see IU  in the same class as the Pats?

Please share your thoughts on this troubling issue.

Great blog canderson! In my opinion the answer is simple: Sampson must go. I am an IU graduate, native Hoosier, and I also live in the heart of darkness: Massachusetts. I find it hard not to compare spygate and Sampson. Actually, I think Sampson's situation is worse. IU was aware that Sampson had difficulty understanding the phone contact rules while he was at Oklahoma and we still hired him. Maybe there was a good reason for this, he clearly does know the game and is a tallented coach. Even so, he seems to not be able to learn the rules even after they are explained to him and, much worse, appears to have been untruthful with the NCAA investigation. As the highest paid state employee in Indiana (the $7 million salary would pay for a lot of tuition for a lot of students) he should be held to a very high standard--and so should the athletic director who hired him. As an aside, I think a Colts blog would be about the only NFL site to have a college hoops discussion. I remember when the Colts first arrived in Indy the offense had to continually silence the crowd because we thought we should be really loud no matter whether we were on offense or defense...that's what we do at the basketball game, right? We finally figured out this football thing. Go Colts!

I wrote a rather lenghty email to canderson about this and my main point was that IU has been a well respected institution from its inception both scholastically and athletically. It has been 48 years since there has ever been any whiff of scandal and certainly no sanctions and I have lost some interest in basketball since Coach Knight left also, but I am also an alumni. This team is a very fine bunch of kids and what Sampson did was wrong, whatever the NCAA says should be done, will be done. It is, however no where near what BigBelly did in NE. I believe he should be fired but it is not up to me. Its up to people whose jobs it is to solve these things. If I sound mad over canderson, I AM!

i just think the pats are over-rated, and if they need to do this to win, then they are just as all of us colts fans have always said, losers!!!!!! cheaters never end up on top. look at there coach, total attitude, and head case. real teams stand out about the rest, just like our colts, we can win with what we have, and do it with class.

Hey know its been a whilw been real sick here but doing better and as far as sampson he should be gone for cheating IU has been a well repped school for basketball for many years unlike the PATS who came outta no where right after Billachek got there So if he were cheating from the start and just got caught no one would have noticed to where IU has been subdued by a new coach and put in a bad situation but if they went with it and had no complaints''' then they are just as guilty and should lose thier right this year >>>>GO COLTS!!!

I am also a firm believer that Sampson done this with no help from the team. He done it in Oklahoma now here in Indiana. The team is a great team and should not be put in the same category as the Patriots. If Sampson is guilty then by all means do what must be done, but let the players be who they are "the players". IU'S basketball program has always been respected by all and should remain the same, look down on the coach not the respect that the program has earned!

I lost interest in the IU program when they fired Bob. Hey maybe they will hire him back. LOL. I would move back to Indiana if they did!!

I don't know about the IU basketball situation, but...I agree with sithlord. What has happened to our society where cheating, bending the rules, etc. (however you want to define the gray areas) is to be expected/the norm and fair play is the exception!!! I've got to believe our kids, young adults and lower level coaches look up to the pro players, coaches, staff, etc. and their example trickles down. We need more Dungys, Mannings, etc. in the professional sports world.

I find this whole thing very very distrubing. I don't know about the rest of you but I was always taught that sports and games were just that sports and games and it didn't matter if you won or lost it was for the fun of it. The parents who yell at their kids and coaches and so on because they are lossing or not preforming to their expections should really step back and take a look at the current situations. I wouldnt be surprised that both the coach from IU and Bellichoke had an up bringing like that...going to any lengths no matter if it is fair or not to win at a GAME. Something that is supposed to be for fun. It really makes me more aware of how I act and teach my kids.

One should always start with a warning, and work up the discipline ladder. I know nothing about Indiana Basketball.
