Why is the Nation Rooting for the Patriots?

ESPN's Sports Nation poll shows that 61% of the nation beleive the Patriots will win Super Bowl XLII. Listening to the national sports talk radio shows this week the general consensus is that most fans who are not fans of either the Giants or the Patriots are rooting for the Patriots!!

Why would anyone want to root for the Patriots? They say it is about the possibility of "witnessing history".

I say we witnessed history when the Patriots were exposed for cheating, videotaping the NY Jets in the first game of the season. Now it has been revealed that they may have recorded the final walk through of the St Louis Rams before their Super Bowl matchup.

With so much evidence of the cheating ways of the Patriots team why is the nation rooting for them to fulfil the dream of a perfect season? Is it that our culture doesn't care about cheating? Is it that we subscibe to the adage, "If you'te not cheating, you're not trying"?

There seems to be a disconnect, so much is made of barry Bond's cheating by using steroids but there is little concern over the Patriot's cheating. Why is this? Why is the nation rooting for the Patriots? Are you? (I think I know the answer, but I had to ask)

I hate the Patriots! They are big fat cheaters! Shouldn't be able to play in the playoffs!

It is so sad to witness what is happening to our nation. The Spygate thing is just another symptom of what we have become. Our nations leaders subscribe to this very same mentality. Corperate America does these things on a daily basis. The media bombards us every day with more and more of this 'relativeism' to where there is no more right or wrong. I can't 'root' for the Patriots especially in the light of what has happened this year. I hoped that the Giants could beat them and, thankfully, they did. I, honestly, didn't think they could do it. Funny how things work out. Great blog, thought provoking.

I am not sure that the nation is root for the pat's as much as being realistic about who could win the game. I voted in that poll and said the pat's because i thought they would jsut find a way to win it. I was rooting for the Giants but still did not expect them to win.

I am watching the game right now, and I am NOT rooting for the Patriots! I want the GIANTS to win! BTW, anyone get a load of Peyton in the stands. He hasn't sat down yet! haha. Gotta love him.

Thank you, I feel the same way. I wonder why there is no talk of it all the time! I will be rooting the Giants all the way! GO MAnning!!!!!

Cheating is Cheating. I saw on pre-game coverage that Qb Ron Jaworski said he is O.K. with taping the other team when they don't know about it. A ll that is teaching kids is that it is O.K. to cheat if you got the money to pay the fines. GO GIANTS!!!!

Great blog & well-written!! I don't know about all of the other football fans out there, but I will always have a GREAT BIG ASTERISK in my mind whenever I think about the Patriots. Anyone that is rooting for them has to be completely ignorant to the fact that the Patriots are known-cheaters, or maybe their fans just don't care & figure that's the only way they can win. Anyways, GO GIANTS!!!

I'm rootin for NY Giants.. I think Pats should be DISQUALIFY FOR SUPER BOWL & CHAMPIONSHIP PERIOD!!!! THAT IS HEAVIEST PUNISHMENT THEY SHOULD BE FACING IS HEAVY FINES, DISQUALIFY PLAYOFFS FOR NEXT FEW YEARS AND PUT THEM ON PROBATIONS IF ANY ELSE TO VIOLATION NFL REGULATIONS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT WILL AUTOMATICALLY PUT THEM TO VIOLATE THE PROBATIONS.
