Is Dungy Considering Retirement?

There has been a lot of speculation this week around a story that Tony's son Eric has enrolled in a high schoool in Florida and that this means Tony will retire at the end of this season.

My thoughts on this are that Tony will, like he does every year, evaluate things at the end of the season.  I don't beleive that win lose or draw this week, in the AFC Championship game, or the Super Bowl,  will have a direct impact on his decision.  Like every year he will look at his family and how staying or leaving will affect them.

I believe that Tony is looking out for his son, Eric's best interests.  With all due respect to Park Tudor, if you have a son with great football skills, from a family with a pro history, and that son aspires to play college and subsequently pro football, where doy ou think the best opportunities lie?

Florida is second only to Texas as far as high school football programs go.  The liklihood of being recuited by the national powers are much greater playing on a Florida high school team, than playing at Park Tudor.

My hope and belef is that after the Colts repeat as Super Bowl Champs, Tony will decide to stay at least a few more years to coich the Colts.  Whatever he decides, I know it will be in the best interest of himself, his family and the team.

What are your thoughts?

I would have to say that Coach Dungy will most likely retire. Last year he was going to retire (at least thought about it) and his contract was not up. This year his contract is not up and he is still thining about it. Normaly you do not think about getting out of a contract with only one year left on your contract. You heard it first here Tony Dungy has meet his goals as a head Coach. With great regret by all Colts fans he will retire! (But When?)

We have had the best and classiest coach for many years now. I feel blessed to have had him touch my life. I hope he stays but if he goes I wish him well and know that Irsey will find us someone who will have the same values.

Great blog. I know Tony will do what is best for his son, family and the team. I will be sad if he leaves. He has been a wonderful coach. I will wait to hear after the season is over to speculate on his decision.

This is a really poor playing game, I believe after this game he will make up his mind & retire.

You make some very good points. But by him being Tony's son Eric would get looks by schools just because of who his dad is no matter where he plays.

I agree with everything you have pointed out, especially why Eric transfered. The media naturaly will latch on to whatever will make the biggest story. Tony retiring is a lot bigger than his son going to a school because it's better for his future. Personally, I believe Coach will fulfill his contract. After that he may renew on a yearly basis, or retire, depending on what is best for him, his family, and the team.

I totally agree with you on that one. I think he will do as he did last yr and meet with his family, Jim Irsay and Bill Polian and we will have to see what happens. Just like what Gordon said he does have a contract with the COLTS until 2009. I am going to think positive and pray that he stays with the COLTS longer. GO!!! COLTS!!!

Thanks for the information. I'm not in Indy so I don't get all the news that you obviously have. It's good insight into what the national sport's media is speculating about. I pray that he will have wisdom in making his decision and am thankful for what he's done for my long-time favorite team. I also pray that the owners of the Colts will also have wisdom in doing what is best for our beloved Colts! Let's all take care of the playoffs first. Go Colts!

Everyone has to decide for themselves when the time is right to retire. I will support Tony's decision either way. I will be sure to give thanks for the good work done during Tony's time in Indy.
