Blog: 2007: Will the Colts Repeat?

A Sad Ending, to a Great Year!

It wasn't the ending that any one wanted, or even envisioned, but the Colt's attempt at defending their World Championship officially came to an end on Sunday, in the last NFL game to ever be played in the RCA DOME. The great debate will once again begin as to what benefit earning a first round BYE really gives at team, but it will remain a question that there will never be a an absolute answer to. Circumstances will always differ from one team to another, making the answer one that is always dependent on the result, and not the prediction - win, and it is great, loose and it was a big mistake.

This game was decided on the execution of one team (the Chargers) and the lack thereof from the other (our beloved Colts)! The Chargers are to be commended for the performance they were able to put together on the road, in an extremely difficult place to play. They would begin the game with their #1 receiver playing with a dislocated toe and he would never be a factor. They would loose the leading rusher in the NFL before halftime, only to turn around and loose their starting quarterback a quarter later. Yet they still managed to make enough plays to secure the victory, and put an end to our magical season. It was the type of performance we have seen time and time again this season, by OUR Colts!

The building was electric, and the Colts came onto the field looking to be very energized and ready to go. The offense moved the ball at will against the Charger defense, but kept shooting themselves in the foot once they got inside the Red Zone - three turnovers while in scoring position. The hit on Marvin was pretty solid resulting in his fumble, but the other two were unforced errors with balls going through the hands of receivers - you will not win many games, let alone playoff games, with that kind of execution.

I felt though, that the difference in the game came on the defensive side of the ball. It was complete role reversal from a year ago, where the defense was very suspect all year long, only to turn it up a notch in the Playoffs, proving to be the catalyst in the run to the Super Bowl. This year, the defense was miraculous all year long, but looked like a different unit on Sunday, against a Chargers offense without it's three primary weapons for large parts of the game. There were too many big plays given up to the Chargers and the Colts committed 10 penalties for 79 yards - a very un-Colt like performance in a BIG game!

It was an extremely difficult loss for all involved, but as is usually the case, was handled with the utmost class by all. I was extremely pleased with the lack of negative comments by Colt fans as they exited the stadium - the emotion was obvious, and the mood was very subdued, but I was proud walking out and not hearing the kinds of things I have heard when I went on the road to other stadiums and watched the Colts win. I heard MANY well wishes to the Charger fans who were in attendance, and offers of support as they go to that East coast city next week!

So it will be a very long offseason, with much uncertainty about certain aspects with the team. Will Tony return next year? How many assistant coaches will get job offers from other teams? Will Polian and Irsay be able to work out a contract extension for Dallas, or will he get the franchise tag? What other players will test the free agent market? Regardless, The future this franchise is extremely bright. The number one defense in the league will get Freeney, McFarland and Morris all back. The many rookies who played so well this year will get a second training camp, along with all the experience they gained this year. Peyton shows me no signs of letting up, and the offense should just continue improving!

I know it hurts right now, but nothing can be done to change what happened today. We will all have to find our own way to deal with what we are feeling, but just try to think of all the wonderful things we have witnessed this year, and don't hesitate to draw support from the many wonderful people on this network, if needed.

I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing my thoughts with all of you this year. Thanks so much for all the words of encouragement throughout the year, and I look forward to continuing what we have started! I am not going away, and will continue to add things to my content.

Stay True to the Blue, and God Bless you all!

I agree with you Chaz! I was encuraging the fans that were leaving at the 2:00 minut mark to not leave the game is not over yet. With 1:37 minutes left and the Colts had the Ball with timeouts left, I told my fellow fans that a great time will find a way to win in the end! It was really hard to take that we could not even get a first down, after seeing the way we moved the ball all day. I will still support the team as I have in years past. It seems like a jinx to get a bye in the playoffs for the Colts. They have lost the divisional game every time they have had a bye in the previous week.

The officials tried to give us the game and we still didn't take it. Either 'A', we played that bad or 'B', we got severly outcoached. We are lucky this team didn't blow us out because the refs actually kept the game close enough for us to win and we still didn't convert in the red zone. I'm just tired of seeing the best team get beat when we should actually have at least 3 superbowls by now.

Thanks for adding me as a friend, Chaz. I totally agree with all of your comments about Sunday's game and loss. I was SO proud of our fans, who could have so easily expressed more than disappointment in the way the game was played. I'm sad the season is over, but still so proud of the team's progress this year! Go Colts! Thanks for a great season!!

I'm sorry, I love Tony but I think maybe it's time for him to move on. We all owe him alot as fans but if he enrolled his kids in school in Tampa he prob. is moving on anyway. I really believe he was out coached and unprepaired for the bolts. Don't get me wrong, he is an amazing person and human being and a great father as well. However I think the Colts need a change. Dungy might be too nice if that's possible. I think we need someone to rough these guys up once in a while. Also the loss to the Titans 1 wk before playoffs. Why not win the last reg. season game? Why go into the playoffs with a loss? As far as saving people from getting injured, I think it injured our team by not playing them at all. Why not put Marvin back in after the fumble? What's up with that? Our whole team looked injured. As far as Dungy goes I think he flat out got outcoached and was unprepaired. I don't know, I'm as upset about this as you guys are and maybe I'm talking out my ass, but I think a change in coaching wouldn't be a bad thing I guess.Well anyway GO BLUE GO BLUE GO BLUE !!!!!!!!!!!!

Fabulous Blog Chaz!! And your right, it was a great disappointment, and I am very thankful that OUR COLTS FANS will not turn their back on them in their time of need. Staying true to your team even when times are hard are what (I think) helps a team to still maintain focus (That and Prayer and Family). So you can bet that during the offseason they each are on my prayer list! I can't wait to see the new Stadium and I can't wait to see what happens Next Year! May God Bless Each Player and Their Families, and God Bless Each Of You!!!! BLUE TO THE CORE!!

I for one accepted the defeat in good sense, though it was like a hard pill to swallow. Anyway, as the saying goes "Not all days are Sundays," and tt proved to be true to our beloved Colts. I just pray to GOD that it's going to be a great offseason for our Colts, as well as each and everyone of us on the network, so that next season we will have the good times and experience as we had during the just ended season. May GOD bless the COLTS and ALL OF US. Go Colts and Believe in Blue.

Glad you had such a good turn out at the brunch! Keep us posted on off season get togethers. It was a very disappointing loss but I'll shake it off in a couple of days and get excited about the new stadium and our next season.

CHAZ!!Sorry we missed the brunch but I woke up with a sore throat and fever and didn't want to make any one else sick ,So I just kinda hung out in the car with the heat on till it was time to go into the dome. For the Game "Well it was a good one" I just wish the Colts would have won. I park in victory field and heard a little trash talk from what I call fair weather fans and it did not make me happy , I think the Colts did a great job to get as far as they did, they had allot of injuries this year and if you really stop and think - there was a bye week last week and the week before that are 1st string was only in I think for the first quarter the week before that there was still allot out on injuries so to make it as far as they did was great in my eyes. and as for Tony all need to understand he has a family and he has lost one son already, I will support him no matter what he dose he is a great man and has gave allot to his team and the fans. My dad is a minister, so I truly understand and if Tony has had a calling from God that is were he needs to be.
