Well the Saturday Wild card games proved to be quite interesting, sort of. What started out very slow in the early game became exciting but then ended up as a rout.
The Seahawks and Redskins stumbled through the first half. Then suddenly the Redskins came to life with 2 quick scores and it looked like we might have a game. Then with 2 interceptions, suddenly the rout was on and the Seahawks are moving on.
What had been a magical few weeks for the Redskins came to an end. Playing for the memory of their fallen teammate Sean Taylor, the Redskins showed a lot of grit just getting into the playoffs. I give them a lot of credit for coming together in the face of a terrible tragedy and putting together a string of wins to close out their season, with a back up quarterback no less.
The second game, Jags and Steelers was just the opposite. What looked like it was going to be a Jaguars rout turned into a competitive game with the Steelers mounting a second half comeback, going up by one point. In the first half, Roethelisberger looked horrid throwing interception after interception.
Then with Pittsburgh leading 28-29, just after the 2 minute warning, with the Jags needing to pick up a 4th and 2, Garrard runs for the first down and more, putting the Jags in easy field goal range. Scobee kicks an easy field goal leaving Pittsburgh with just 37 seconds to drive down the field and take their shot at a go ahead field goal. The Steelers first snap results in a sack and Roethelisberger loses the ball. Game Over.
So it looks like the Jags will get their shot at the Pats next week, unless the Titans upset the Chargers tomorrow. In all likelihood next Sunday the Colts will be hosting the Chargers, pay back time. We had a lot of things go wrong out in San Diego in November, but I think everyone would agree, the likelihood of Peyton throwing 6 INTS and Vinatieri missing a game winning 29 yard field goal again are not likely.
The way I see it, Saturday's Wild Card games were what I expected, not necessarily sharp or highly competitive, but they fulfilled a football void, something to do, something to watch. The AFC game was definitly the better of the 2 games, showcasing how tough a division the AFC South is. Will Next Sunday and REAL football ever get here?
