It is FINALLY here – the start of the 2008 regular season gets underway tonight with the NFL Kickoff Game featuring the reigning Super Bowl Champion NY Giants hosting their divisional rival Washington Redskins. But let’s not kid ourselves, it is all just eye candy until the REAL season gets underway late Sunday evening, when the Chicago Bears make the short trip south to Indianapolis, where they will open the 2008 season against our beloved COLTS. The game will be played before a national television audience where much of the hype will revolve around the debut of Lucas Oil Stadium to the rest of the NFL, but the game itself is what this team, and this city, has been waiting for since the unexpected early exit at the end of last season. There were so many story lines last year – most of them involving an injury of some kind – only to see a similar trend continue through the offseason and into training camp.

While the team will open the season with still some key people not being ready to go, the present health of this team is as good as it has been for some time. Not having Jeff Saturday or Ryan Lilja will present a challenge, but as is always the case with this organization, someone will step up and fill the void.

We will FINALLY get to see the offense that most of us anticipated last year before loosing Marvin for a big part of the season – Marvin and Reggie split wide, Gonzo in the slot, Dallas releasing off the line and Joseph coming out of the backfield! WOW!!!

From what I saw in camp, Marvin is back and will prevent teams from double teaming Reggie like they often did last year. I also believe Marvin is going to be on a mission to silence all the critics that had little to no good things to say about him this past year. He was constantly under attack and because he chose not to discuss his issues with the press, it just escalated from there. It was wonderful to see the positive remarks and support shown to Marvin within this Network!

Coach keeps saying that the most players see the biggest improvement between years one and two – that is a scary proposition for Anthony Gonzalez! Gonzo was still getting his feet wet prior to Marvin’s injury last year, but once he did, the results were great. And consider he was REALLY playing out of position once Marv went down.

Dallas also benefits by moving back to his normal position – I still believe HE is the X-factor for this team since he presents perhaps the biggest match-up problem in all of the NFL. The combination of his size, speed and great hands, cannot be practiced against, nor easily defended when you have two Pro Bowl receivers sitting on the outside. And as soon as teams try to take Dallas away, then we revert back to Gonzo open running across the middle.

That brings us to the running back position, and I believe it is as good as it has EVER been - from top to bottom. We get the elusiveness that Joseph Addai brings to the field, the speed and savvy that Dominic Rhodes has to offer, and the hard-nosed physical running style that Mike Hart will offer in specific situations. I also like what I saw in camp with TE Gijon Robinson playing the role of H-back, as well as a particular play that the Colts ran over and over and over, with a very unsuspecting player catching some passes out of the backfield – if they use it during a game, you will ALL think back and understand exactly what play (and player) I am talking about!

They say that early in an NFL season, the DEFENSE is always a little bit ahead of the OFFENSE – I offer to you, and history would back it up, that the Colts work just the opposite. Quick starts over the last 4-5 years can be attributed to being able to score points EARLY in the season, while other teams struggle to do so. Due to the extensive number of injuries on the defensives side of the ball, I believe it will be imperative for our offense to be able to put points on the board while we continue to get a little bit healthier (players have missed a lot of time during camp).

The answers to everyone’s questions are just a few days away – it has been a very LONG offseason, following the magical ride we were on following the Super Bowl victory the year before!

NOW is time to start cranking up the energy!

NOW is the time to start warming up the vocal chords,

And NOW is the time to remind the rest of the NFL that the HARDEST place to play STILL resides in Indianapolis!

NO FORCE LIKE THE HORSE!!!!

I think you are so right, Chaz. All of us out here can see the improvement and have taken serious note of it. With the Colts apparently relatively healthy, covering Dallas Clark presents serious problems for ANY defense. You cover him and someone else opens up. Should make for an exciting rematch between the Colts and Bolts later this year. I can only hope my guys stay healthy that long. I hope they can plug in someone that will take the reigns for Jeff Saturday and be effective. With the knee surgery on Peyton, I hope someone will be able to protect him. Best of luck to all the folks on MyColts.net this season.

Chaz again you are right on the Button!!! When the Colts put up early points, it takes away the other teams offensive plan to run the ball down our throat and they have to throw to catch up. What does that do? It plays right into the hands of Freeney, Mathis, and Sanders hands, Freeney will spin right into the Q.B. or Mathis will get him from the other side, and of course Sanders will be head hunting!! Lions and Tigers and Bears, OH NO....Marv and Reggie and Dallas and Gonzo, and JOE, OH MY!!!!

Hoping that with all the weapons the COLTS have that any rust Peyton has won't matter so much. Good to see the defense back from the injuries. We'll have to see it on TV, here in NC, so make some N-O-I-S-E!!!

Good analysis! Wish I could be there to see the game live, but will surely be watching from Iowa via TV.

 PART I

Since the miraculous defeat of Darth Bellicheat and the Evil Empire (aka Patriots), there has been a sense of Peace throughout the NFL Galaxy.

During this time, the Empire has been hard at work re-building its forces in preparation of future battles that are yet to be waged against the Republic. The Imperial Fleet has expanded its forces to the Western part of the Galaxy (San Diego), as well as to the South (Jacksonville & Dallas). But the disturbance within the HORSE does not stop here – there are reports that longtime Jedi Master Favre, has abandoned his home planet of Green Bay, and is now studying in the ways of the Dark Side. It is not yet clear just how effective the new Sith Lord will be as he leads his new troops into battle against the Republic, but his presence is sure to have an immediate impact on the struggling Imperial forces on planet New York.

It has been a long road back for the Colt Republic, since their defeat at the hands of the Charger Empire many months ago. As crushing as the defeat was, enthusiasm is at an all time high as the Colt Republic prepares for battle in their new home (LOS) deep in the heart of planet INDY. The Power of the Horse can be felt across the Galaxy, and anticipation is building for the first conflict that is rapidly approaching against the dreaded Imperial forces from Chicago. Jedi Master Manning will lead his Colt forces into battle, and for the first time in over ten conflicts, he will once again have the services of fellow Jedi Master, Marvin, at his side. Young Jedi Knights Wayne, Clark, Addai and Gonzales, will join them to create an offensive juggernaut that should keep enemy forces in a state of disarray!

President Polian, with the support of CEO Irsay, and the leadership of Commander Dungy, has once again assembled all the pieces that are needed to return the Colt Republic back to the top of the NFL Galaxy! There are many new faces among the troops, and all have been extensively tested in preliminary conflicts over the last few moons. They will head into battle collectively as strong as any of their predecessors on planet INDY. The battle lines have been drawn and all preparations have been made. It’s a NEW BEGINNING for forces all across the Galaxy.

But there is NO force greater than that of the HORSE,

An Opening to Remember!

It was a great time to be a Colts fan on Sunday evening and while the level of play on the new turf of Lucas Oil Stadium was maybe not as sharp as any of us would have liked, it did little to damper the festivities for me!

While many thousands of people were able to preview the stadium during the tours a week earlier, nothing compared to the extravaganza the Colts management had prepared for the fans on Sunday evening. The many activities that were commonplace in Pan Am Plaza have been relocated to the southeast corner of the stadium (The FAN ZONE) and it got rocking early! There was a band was playing as you walked through the North entrance of LOS, on a stage set up inside the giant horseshoe that hangs there with the field in the background – what a GREAT setting. The opening of the roof was delayed until just before game time, to allow the majority of the people to be inside the stadium and witness it for the first time.

Native Hoosier, Amanda Overmyre, of American Idol fame, was there singing a terrific song during the opening of the roof. Then the GIANT American Flag was brought out (covering the ENTIRE football field) while she returned to sing the Star Spangled Banner complete with rockets red-glaring and bombs bursting in air – if that didn’t make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up than you might need to be checked for a pulse!!! An attendance of 65,333 was announced, and I am pretty sure that all but THREE were in their seats before kickoff (OK, maybe as many as ten).

That was all BEFORE any football was even played. As it turned out, the football that DID get played wasn’t nearly as exciting as the opening festivities. The offense was never able to get into any kind of rhythm throughout the entire game, and while the Defense played pretty well on first and second downs, they failed to stop anything on third down.  While total yardage numbers were pretty comparable (257 to 233) there are two OTHER stats that sum up the game – Buffalo had the ball for 43 minutes to the Colts’ 17 minutes, AND the Colts had 5 turnov
